Space shuttle endeavour first launch12/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Spare parts from the construction of Discovery (OV-103) and Atlantis (OV-104), manufactured to facilitate the repair of an orbiter if needed, were eventually used to build OV-105.Įndeavour also featured new hardware, designed to improve and expand orbiter capabilities. ![]() SeptemStart structural assembly of aft-fuselageĭecemWings arrive at Palmdale, Calif. Just as James Cook set the standard with his seafaring Endeavour voyage, the Space Shuttle Endeavour missions have continued to uphold and surpass the standards set by its namesake, more than 200 years later.įebruStart structural assembly of Crew Module OV-105 became the first Space Shuttle orbiter to use a drag chute during a landing - only one of many technical improvements made to Endeavour. The research tested the production of protein crystals grown in microgravity.īecause of Endeavour's excellent performance, NASA decided to extend the flight two days to complete more mission objectives and allow the crew enough time to prepare for landing. The crew also took part in the Commercial Protein Crystal Growth experiment. This was the first time four spacewalks were conducted on a Space Shuttle mission and one of them was the longest in space history, lasting more than eight hours. Once the new motor was attached, it propelled the satellite into the correct orbit, providing a relay link for the equivalent of 120,000 two-way simultaneous telephone calls and three television channels. They conducted medical tests assessing the human body's performance in microgravity, and recorded footage for an educational video comparing Cook's first voyage on Endeavour with the Space Shuttle orbiter's maiden voyage. An unprecedented three-person spacewalk took place after the procedure was evaluated by the astronauts and ground team.īetween rescue attempts, the STS-49 crew was busy with a variety of activities. It took three attempts to capture the satellite for repairs to be made. The project sparked public interest in the mission and NASA received a deluge of suggestions on possible ways for the crew to grab onto the satellite. Unfortunately, the Space Shuttle wasn't designed to retrieve the satellite, which created many repair challenges. One of Endeavour's primary assignments was to capture INTELSAT VI, an orbiting, but not functioning, communications satellite, and replace its rocket motor. Its first launch, the STS-49 mission, began with a flawless liftoff on May 7, 1992, beginning a journey filled with excitement, anticipation and many firsts. Space Shuttle Endeavour embodies similar experiences. Cook also established the usefulness of including scientists on voyages of exploration. Thousands of new plant specimens and animal species were observed and illustrated on this maiden voyage. This reading enabled astronomers to find the distance of the Sun from the Earth, which then could be used as a unit of measurement in calculating the parameters of the universe.Ĭook's achievements on Endeavour were numerous, including the accurate charting of New Zealand and Australia and successfully navigating the Great Barrier Reef. He commanded a crew of 93 men, including 11 scientists and artists.Ĭook's main objective, tasked by the British Admiralty and the Royal Society, was to observe the Transit of Venus at Tahiti. In May 1989, President George Bush announced the winning name.Įndeavour was named after a ship chartered to traverse the South Pacific in 1768 and captained by 18th century British explorer James Cook, an experienced seaman, navigator and amateur astronomer. They were asked to select a name based upon an exploratory or research sea vessel. Authorized by Congress in August 1987 as a replacement for the Space Shuttle orbiter Challenger, Endeavour (OV-105) arrived at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility on May 7, 1991, piggy-backed on top of NASA's new Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.įor the first time, an orbiter was named through a national competition involving students in elementary and secondary schools. ![]()

Therefore, IT has the option to set up Group Policies, which enable multiple user groups with permission profiles. With AnyDesk’s screenshare option, you can untick all participant permissions and simply allow co-workers to sit back and watch. The benefit of screen sharing is that your co-workers can view your screen from all over the world and follow your presentation in real-time while simultaneously having no access to your desktop. On the other hand, you could grant employees too much power by giving them the opportunity to restart the device, transfer files or lock the session screen, which could ultimately cause issues. You should be able to control it to some extent, so mouse and keyboard permissions are necessary. Imagine you want to remotely control a machine that is used by several employees within a company, like a printer or scanner for example. Real t rex skull for sale12/7/2023 ![]() The mounted fossil cuts a dashing figure, and the animal has an intriguing wound in its frill that healed during its life. While it’s uncommon to find a Triceratops skull together with its skeleton, as was the case with Big John, the dinosaur’s completeness-with 75 percent of its skull and 60 percent of the full skeleton-isn’t unheard of, and its bones vary in quality from beautifully preserved to weathered. On October 21, the Paris-based auction houses Binoche et Giquello and Hôtel Drouot sold Big John on behalf of the Italian fossil firm Zoic for the highest price ever paid at a European auction for a fossil-and the highest price ever paid at auction for a fossil creature other than Tyrannosaurus rex. With a reconstructed skull stretching more than five feet long (155 centimeters), Big John’s noggin is a few inches larger than any Triceratops skull that has been documented in the scientific literature, earning the dinosaur a Guinness World Record. ( Venture inside the homes-and minds-of private fossil collectors in National Geographic magazine.) Some scientists are worried that the growing prices for ancient bones could drive future fossils into private collections, preventing researchers from studying the irreplaceable remains. rex skeleton called Stan sold to an anonymous buyer in a court-mandated auction for $31.8 million-the most ever paid for a fossil. A little more than a year ago, a scientifically important T. With much fanfare and a jaw-dropping sale price of $7.7 million (6.65 million euros) to an anonymous buyer last month, Big John became a big deal-and added fuel to an ongoing, thorny debate among scientists, auctioneers, commercial paleontologists, and private landowners.īig John is just the latest high-profile fossil to sell for millions of dollars. Then, in 2020, he sold the fossil to an Italian firm that prepared it for auction. museum would purchase it-but none came forward. For six years, he held on to the Triceratops in hopes that a U.S. The founder of a South Dakotan firm called PaleoAdventures, which digs up fossils for commercial sale, Stein nicknamed the fossil “Big John” after the owner of the ranch where he found it. Stein realized he was looking at the horns of a Triceratops, and despite the horns’ weathered condition, he could tell that they belonged to a big one. Picture taken September 15, 2020.Walter Stein was exploring a ranch in Perkins County, South Dakota, in 2014 when he stumbled across a root-covered set of bones that had tumbled out of an eroding hillside. Stan was the most recent T Rex skull to be auctioned in the U.S. The head of an approximately 67 million-year-old Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton named "STAN" after paleontologist Stan Sacrison who first found it, is seen on display ahead of its public auction at Christie's in New York City, New York, U.S., September 15, 2020. This specimen may not be headed to a research institution, though. Marks on the skull are interesting to study “because they give us an idea about what life was like during the Cretaceous period,” Hatton said. “We don’t know that this is what caused the death of this animal, but we can tell that it did have a major battle during its lifetime,” she said. Hatton said two large puncture holes in the skull are evidence of a big fight, probably with another T. The 6 1/2-foot (2-meter) fossil is about 76 million years old and still has most of the external skull bones and numerous teeth, Sotheby’s experts said. Hatton noted, “When you think about it, more people can fit a skull in their home than people who could fit a full dinosaur.” rex’s remains were destroyed over time by erosion, but Sotheby’s experts said the skull was a major find. She called the area “the world capital for T. rex skeletons like Sue and Stan were found, according to Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s head of science and popular culture.
